Have Your Checked Your Girls? The Importance of Self Breast Exams

I'm going to take a break from the breast shape series to remind you to do your monthly self breast exam.

One in 9 Canadian women is expected to develop breast cancer and one in 29 Canadian women will die from it. These are staggering statistics. However, the good news is, there is something every woman can do to decrease these numbers. Statistics continue to decline due to earlier detection through self breast exams, regular mammography screening, advances in screening technology such as Digital Infrared Imaging, and improved treatments. The facts are there; now it’s up to you.

It is important to do a monthly self breast examination to assist in early detection. You need to know your breasts; how they look and feel (involve your partner, as who knows your breasts better than them). Note changes in shape, color, skin type and any bruising, pimples or redness (possible indication of inflammatory breast cancer which is highly virulent).

Not all changes indicate cancer, so don’t be afraid to check of abnormalities. Sore breasts, for example, may be a result of menopause, a pulled muscle, or your menstrual cycle. A rule of thumb that I use is if the same condition is evident in both breasts at the same time, it is likely not an issue.

Although there is no absolute, hard-and-fast method for doing a self breast examination, the following provides a guideline for newbie’s.*

Step 1: Begin by looking at your breasts in the mirror with your shoulders straight and your arms on your hips. Here's what you should look for:
  • Breasts that are their usual size, shape, and color
  • Breasts that are evenly shaped without visible distortion or swelling
If you see any of the following changes, bring them to your doctor's attention:
  • Dimpling, puckering, or bulging of the skin
  • A nipple that has changed position or an inverted nipple (pushed inward instead of sticking out)
  • Redness, soreness, rash, or swelling
Step 2: Now, raise your arms and look for the same changes.

Step 3: While you're at the mirror, look for any signs of fluid coming out of one or both nipples (this could be a watery, milky, or yellow fluid or blood).

Step 4: Next, feel your breasts while lying down, using your right hand to feel your left breast and then your left hand to feel your right breast. Use a firm, smooth touch with the first few finger pads of your hand, keeping the fingers flat and together. Use a circular motion, about the size of a quarter.

Cover the entire breast from top to bottom, side to side — from your collarbone to the top of your abdomen, and from your armpit to your
cleavage.

Follow a pattern to be sure that you cover the whole breast. You can begin at the nipple, moving in larger and larger circles until you reach the outer edge of the breast. You can also move your fingers up and down vertically, in rows, as if you were mowing a lawn. This up-and-down approach seems to work best for most women. Be sure to feel all the tissue from the front to the back of your breasts: for the skin and tissue just beneath, use light pressure; use medium pressure for tissue in the middle of your breasts; use firm pressure for the deep tissue in the back. When you've reached the deep tissue, you should be able to feel down to your ribcage.

Step 5: Finally, feel your breasts while you are standing or sitting. Many women find that the easiest way to feel their breasts is when their skin is wet and slippery, so they like to do this step in the shower. Cover your entire breast, using the same hand movements described in Step 4.

Here's to a healthy and long life!

Eco-Friendly Laundry Detergents

Let’s face it; a good bra that provides comfort and makes you feel pretty becomes almost an obsession and needs to be well taken care of.

Using a detergent specifically designed for your delicates will give them a much longer life. Since tomorrow is Earth Day I thought I would share with you two of our favorite brands and their impact on our earth.

Eucalan

"Eucalan is a No Rinse Delicate Wash that is non-toxic, biodegradable, and free of bleach, phosphates, synthetic fragrance and dye.  Eucalan is pH neutral and is packaged in an easy to recycle, dye free hdpe plastic bottle.  Eucalan is scented with essential oils of eucalyptus, lavender, and grapefruit, and is also available in natural (unscented).  The lanolin acts as a natural conditioner, keeping fibres supple and reducing static." Click here for the ingredient list.

Forever New

www.forevernew.ca

Forever New promises to "Launder with Kindness". Both the powder and liquid detergents for lingerie and swim are made with plant based, biodegradable cleansers. They are never formulated with parabens, phthalates, SLES & dyes, and are never tested on animals. One bottle of the liquid does 126 hand washes and 375 hand washes with the powder. Because of it's organic nature Forever New rinses completely clean, meaning it doesn't cling to the fibers of your delicates, giving them a longer life. Click here for the ingredient list.

A Few of My Favorite Things: Travel Edition

With the nickname Gypsy Feet, there is no question that I love to travel. Three to four times a year you'll find me hopping on a plane to the next adventure. Tropical, third world, europe. I love it all.

With a bag always packed, I'm ready to go. Here are a few of my favorite things. Some can be conveniently purchased at The Girls. (Giggle.)

A. Mambo, my faithful travel companion. This little guy has been literally around the world and back.
B. Sunscreen picked up in Japan and menthol salve from Watkins.
C. Downy wrinkle free spray, travel size pit stick and a travel size flat iron.
D. This travel bag from LLBean can be hung up. You can also take the center piece out and hang it up in the shower. Love this feature in hotel and hostel showers.
E. Eucalan Lint Remover Sheets. "Simply peel off the back and then pat it on your garment to remove unwanted lint or hair." 20 sheets per packet. Sold conveniently at The Girls.
F. Eucalan Wipes. Blot or rub the wipe on the affected spot as soon as possible for stain treating. Also sold at The Girls.
G. An emergency kit of body tape for those fashion emergencies. Sold at The Girls.
H. Travel size of the Eucalan detergent. This is great for minimizing what you need to pack for long trips as you can quickly sneak a panty soak in the sink anytime. If you are concerned about liquid allowances, Forever New is a great alternative in the powder form. Both are sold at The Girls.

The Bra & Panty Travel Solution

This guest post is by Elaine Shannon. Executive Producer and Host of Simply Zen TV . Inspiring and Informing viewers with concrete ways of improving their Spiritual, Mental and Physical well BE-ing. Simply Zen can be seen on Bell Aliant’s Community One Channel or online on the Bell Aliant Website.

I was introduced to THE braBAG & THE pantyPAK by my friends at The Girls Bra Shop located in Rothesay, NB Canada. As a frequent traveller and lover of all things organized they thought I would find this product to be not only pretty but functional.

These very girlie looking products are for packing your wardrobe foundation pieces. You know the delicates that you launder so carefully and then when you travel they get thrown in a suitcase with everything including your dirty shoes. Some people might even suggest packing these delicates in your shoes to save space...can we say yuck! Well not anymore.

THE pantyPAK

Let’s start with the panties. This two sided zippered garment holder has a side for the clean ones and then a side for, as it says, ‘not so clean’ ones. I loved this tagging that leaves nothing to guesswork. You know what that means...forgetting which compartment you have the dirties in can be somewhat stressful. This is a great product feature for sure.

Capacity is also important for travellers these days. With increased baggage costs and weight restrictions, packing efficiently is the key to travel. On average for a one week vacation you would want at least seven pairs of undies or even more if you are travelling to a hot climate and frequent changes are required. We had some fun with this and the Gals from The Girls Bra Shop challenged me on how many pairs of panties would fit in this handy travel gadget. They got six pairs in the clean side and six pairs in the unclean side and a bottle of forever new detergent in the middle. Great to have if you don’t mind doing a bit of laundry while on vacation.  I tried a different strategy and packed for the vacation on the clean side without adding the detergent...sorry no laundry chores while I am on vacation. I was able to fit; three cotton type, two thongs and three nylon type. I was happy with this amount and if I had all nylon ones I would have been able to get at least 10 pairs in.

Another great option with this pantyPAK would be the carry handles that upon first observation is just another handle. However for those of us that like to dress after showering the pantyPAK can be hung on the doorknob or on the hook on the back of the bathroom door. Making this added feature very useful.

THE braBAG

The braBAG comes in two convenient sizes. I was glad to hear that because I got the product to test and was disappointed when my ample Brazziere did not fit the first one.  The braBAG BUXOM is perfect us curvy gals...yahoo a company that makes products for ‘real girls’.

A foundation garment like the bra is the staple of a great wardrobe. They put everything in place and make you look great, I might add, the right bra can also make you look slimmer. These garments are an investment and a delicate underwire could be damaged quite easily if left loose in a cramped and tightly packed suitcase. This hard sided over the shoulder boulder holder gadget is perfect for the job. Not only is it pretty, it is sturdy and can handle the crushing abuse at the hands of the airport baggage handlers.

I would normally pack three-four bras for an average trip and I was able to get this many in and the snaps closed tightly.

Always one for options I was able to pack some socks in the cup part of the bras so this gadget also got a thumbs up.

On their Facebook page the Brag Company said this about their product: FUN and FUNCTIONAL gear for the TRENDY TRAVELLER starting with the Bra Bag and Panty Pak. Travel in style and arrive in form!

If you are a Trendy traveller and DO invest in your foundation garments I would suggest this product. The product did everything that they stated on their website. The product information and pricing is very clear on the website. I did not order online so I cannot comment on the shipping and timelines for delivery. You can find them online at www.thebragcompany.com and they can also be purchased locally at The Girls Bra Shop.

I was given a complimentary set for this review and post.

Caring for your delicates ....

Let’s face it; a good bra that provides comfort and makes you feel pretty becomes almost an obsession.  Some women settle on one style and purchase several to ensure they always have a replacement. Other women rely on a special type of bra for their daily workout.  And still others have multiple styles and are always looking for new trends. Regardless of which category you fall into, your bra is important to you, and we at The Girl’s Bra Shop offer products that will increase the longevity of your lingerie and help ensure a great fit.

Organic and biodegradable, Forever New gently cleans, brightens, and promotes longer life in lingerie, hosiery, and swimsuits.  Preserving the fibre-flex and elasticity in your garment allows all fine garments to look new longer.

Organic, non-toxic, and biodegradable, Eucalan is a NO RINSE lanolin product that reduces the work of hand washing and keeps your delicates looking new and beautiful longer.
Great for women on the go.

Remember, rule number one is “always hand wash your delicates” to ensure they provide you with the best fit over a longer period time.  For great tips on proper care and washing techniques, revisit How Long Should My Bra Last.

Swimwear Care

"This year I bought two great swim suits at The Girl’s Bra Shop – one is a tankini, and the other is a one-piece.  Both hug me tightly where most flattering, have enough give for ease of movement, and allow me to bend over without having to yank it back down every time I stand up.  The tankini top even stays down when swimming.  Needless to say, I want these bathing suits to last me forever.   So what should I do?"

First, we at The Girl’s Bra Shop recommend using Forever New Swim Wear Wash.  This most recent addition to our laundry products line for lingerie was developed specifically for swim wear.  Its unique formula neutralizes chlorine by turning it into a natural salt then washing it away, preserving colour and elasticity.

Although common sense tells us that our favorite swim wear won’t last forever, here are a few more tips that will increase its longevity.
  • Soak your new swimsuit for 30 minutes in a vinegar and cold water mixture (one tablespoon white vinegar per quart of water) to prevent dye from bleeding.
  • Alternate between two swimsuits.
  • Always hand wash your swimsuit in cold water.
  • If you do not have access to a gentle detergent like the Forever New Swim Wear Wash, soak your swimsuit at least 30 minutes after every use to remove dirt, sunscreen, chlorine, and body oils.
  • Dry your swimsuit indoors away from direct sunlight.  NEVER use a dryer.
  • Always ensure a smooth surface before you sit, lie, or lean.
  • Avoid wearing your favorite bathing suit in a hot tub.  The extreme heat and chemicals will fade and stretch the material.
  • NEVER iron your swim suit.

Have a great summer!
