I always hated the bra shopping experience. Never knowingwhat size I was and having one breast larger than the other has always beendifficult. I thought I needed a paddedbra to accommodate the smaller breast. I found that no one really explained tome what size I should be wearing and sales clerks never helped me find theright size or even checked in to see if I needed any help. Sometimes, I brought a dozen bras ofdifferent sizes to the change room, desperate to find something suitable. I often bought a bra, only to find when I putin on at home, it was the wrong size band or cup.

On a trip to another province, I had my first ever bra fitting. I left with a great bra. From that day forward, I knew Newfoundland needed a bra shop, so I opened one myself! We offer our clients a professional bra fitting in a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere, with access to a large variety of beautiful, proper fitting bras. We pamper our clients because we believe women deserve to feel good from the inside.

What is your favorite part about being with The Girls?

The smile onladies faces when they first look in the mirror to see what a proper fittingbra can do for their appearance. Suddenly, they are standing straighter andtaller with their shoulders back, and I can see the transformation as theybegin to feel more confident and beautiful. Not only do the bras fit well but they are so pretty. Many women say they finally feel sexy again,and they leave with a new spring in their step.

Tell us about yourself (kids, hobbies, activities…what do you do outside of the store?)

I have a great supportive husband and the cutestlittle Yorkie dog who we think is our little girl. Ilove to toll paint, garden and decorate. Perhaps when I retire I'll become a fortune teller since my friends say I have psychic abilities. I guess you can say I also have a senseof humor. I never take life to seriously.

What is your secret skill or superhero power?

My ability to find the humor in things.

What advice or tip can you give other women?

Color outside the lines, think outside of thebox, and it's never too late to be the best you can be. There's nothing youcan't conquer if you put your heart and mind into it.

Storage Wars

How do you store your bras? When you visit The Girls you will hear our fit mistresses go over the care and keeping of your delicates: Don’t fold or invert your padded bras; lay them flat; always hand wash and hang to dry.

This will shorten the life of the bra

If you are like me you have a good collection of bras and it can be a challenge to store them all neatly in a tiny drawer. So here are a few ideas that may help you out.

If you have padded bras, than you need to take extra special in storing them.

Remember: Turning one cup inside out and folding it inside the other cup is a huge mistake many women make.

Try folding one pad inside out and you will feel the creases forming instantly. By storing the bra this way the creases will stay permanently and show through your clothing.

Lengthen the life of your bras by stacking them.

If you are going to store the padded bras in a drawer, stack them one on top of the other/ or one in front of the other allowing them to lay flat and not bend. Another option is to hang them. When I moved into my home several years ago, the previous owner had a shoe rack anchored to the inside wall of my closet. I never really used it for my shoes so one day I hung a bra there to dry. Voila, it became my new bra rack.

Storing lace and wireless bras are much easier, but still take care. You want to lay them neatly in the drawer, folded in half, one on top of the other or one in front of the other. If they are just tossed in the drawer you could risk twisting the wires and damaging you bras.

Traveling? The lace bras can be neatly stacked in your suitcase no problem. We have recommended to our clients that for travel you may have to fold over that padded bra just til you get to your destination but once there, unpack the padded bras and lay them flat. If you are creative with your packing you can always lay them flat and stuff the cups with softies like your socks and undies.

Brag storage case

Better yet, pick up a Brag bra bag and store your bras in style. The Brag is a hardcover case which store 2 -3 padded bras. It’s luggage for your lingerie. This makes a great gift idea too.

We have said it before that bras are the foundation of your wardrobe. Not only do they affect how you look but also how you feel each day. You’ve taken the time and money to invest in a proper fit, so it only makes sense you would want your investment to last as long as possible. 

Remember, the lifetime of a bra is about 6 – 12 months depending on how often. A little extra care and keeping of your bras can extend their life to twice as long.

Antiperspirants and Breast Cancer

Many people will argue that there in not enough conclusive evidence to support the connection between antiperspirants and breast cancer. But what constitutes sufficient proof when it comes to your breast health, recognizing that in 2011 an estimated 23,400 Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and 5,100 will die of it (Canadian Cancer Society).

Aluminum-free Aromarant Deodorant by Lush

Here’s the story. Aluminum-based compounds, the active ingredient in antiperspirants, form temporary plugs within the sweat duct that stop the flow of sweat to the skin's surface, and control odour. Studies suggest that these compounds may be absorbed by the skin, causing estrogen-like effects, promoting the growth of hormonal based cancer cells.

A recent study from the Reading University found that cancerous tumours are most likely to appear in the parts of the female breast closest to where antiperspirants are applied. Of women studied, the cysts in the armpit area of the breast had 25 times more aluminum than the common amount found in blood.

If a link to breast cancer isn’t enough to make you reconsider using aluminum-free antiperspirants, consider this: most antiperspirants not only include aluminum-based compounds, but up to 20 other toxic chemicals. Studies are now showing that continuous exposure to toxic chemicals in personal hygiene products, such as antiperspirants, may also be related to allergic reactions, and Alzheimer’s.

So what’s the answer? There are now several aluminum-free deodorant products on the market offering women a choice. Unlike antiperspirants, natural deodorants do not block sweat, but help eliminate odour and prevent bacteria from growing. Aluminum-free deodorant many not work for you in every situation, but studies show it is definitely worth considering. There are times when I find I cannot go without using an aluminum-based antiperspirant, when I just need that extra assurance. But those times are becoming less frequent, and I feel good about the choice I have made. Remember, information is power; the choice to use it is up to you.

Choosing the Right Sports Bra

What happens when you do your daily exercise without wearing the proper sports bra? Try this quick demonstration I found on the following website and be enlightened. http://www.intimateguide.com/articles/why-you-need-sports-bra/

Find an ordinary rubber band
Cut it once so that it’s one long strip of rubber instead of a circle
Measure the length of the rubber band (record this number)
Tie a washer or other similar weight to the end of the rubber band
Hold the opposite end of the rubber band and swing it around above your head for the length of your average workout
Untie the weight and measure the rubber band again

You don’t have to actually go through this process to know that the rubber band will be longer. Transfer this information to your breasts and guess what, the more you exercise without proper support, the more stretching will occur. Oh dear!

The primary support structures for the breast are the skin and ligaments called Cooper’s Ligaments. Once these structures are stretched, there’s really no way to “unstretch” them short of surgery. This is true even if you’re an AA cup. Breast bounce is reduced by 38% when wearing an ordinary bra, but up to 74% when wearing a proper fitting sports bra.

Three Minute Breast Exercise

I know that a daily exercise routine is one of the most important things I can do for myself. Although I have incorporated running or walking into my daily schedule, it is almost impossible to find time for focused exercise, such as crunches for the tummy or weight lifting for biceps. So when I heard about an exercise targeting your beasts, I really didn’t give it much thought until I heard the words “three minutes per day”. Not only does this exercise target the breasts, but it cleanses the glands in the upper body, such as those in our armpits, that become congested by our North American lifestyle. Why are you with The Girls?

When shopping for a Bra I always looked for a C cup…It didn’t matter if it was a 34C, 36C, or a 38C as long as I bought a C cup I had the right size. I couldn’t have been more wrong… Since working at The Girls I have learned that the letter (A, B, C etc) is not your actual cup size but the letter is based on the ratio of a series of measurements. So now I wear a 34DD unless it’s a French bra which would be a 34E as double letters don’t exist in the French measuring system, something else I learned from working at The Girls.

What is my favorite part of being with The Girls?

It is hard to choose just one or two…but one of the most profound things is to be a witness to other women coming to the realization that they are normal! Some women have shopped their entire lives never finding a bra that fit them properly, and somehow felt that it was their fault that they did not “Fit” a size range that does not represent the average woman. I love the strength, passion and uniqueness that each of my co-workers represents and I do have to mention my addiction to anything Empriente, their Bras are so beautiful and feminine…

Tell us about yourself (kids, hobbies, activities…what do you do outside of the store?)

I have always been health conscious, mainly eating vegetarian for many years and I try to buy local or organic as much as possible. I love reading, traveling and have been a part of a Belly dance Troupe for close to a decade. I love the music, costumes and the camaraderie that has grown amongst the women. I have been married to my hubby for over 20 years and we have three children.

What is your secret skill or superhero power?

My secret skill is caring…about my family, community, the environment, child poverty and safety, social justice, women’s rights and empowerment, etc. I have been actively involved in the local nonprofit sector for many years, and with organizations like Plan Canada, Amnesty International and Kiva-loans that change lives.

What advice or tip can you give other women?

Be kind and gentle….with yourself! A friend once said “when you die people don’t remember your dress size or how clean your house was" but how special you were to them. I think as women we tend to put too much pressure on ourselves to look and be perfect instead of just being perfectly imperfect…

Coping with Mastectomy

As with most problems in life, distance helps with healing. Not just physical distance, but days, weeks, months and years following the event provide the catalyst for restorative healing. This is no less true with mastectomy survivors. Many women are quick to relate that the physical recovery was easier and quicker than the emotional. It is often referred to as bereavement, with all the anger and sadness this word encompasses.

Fitting mastectomy survivors with the proper bra and breast form is an important part of what we do at The Girl’s Bra Shop. In order to better understand the physical and emotional impact a mastectomy has on our clients, we did some research to pass on to our Fit Mistresses that will equip them with the tools necessary to provide high calibre service. Food for Breast Health

To eat is a necessity, but to eat intelligently is an art. – La Rochefoucauld

We have all heard it said, “You are what you eat”. But for many of us women, it is often what we don’t eat that can have the biggest impact on our health, especially our breast health.

As the incidence of breast cancer in women continues to increase, the rush is on to find proactive ways to prevent the formation of cancerous cell growth. But while science and research continues down this arduous path, we as women can make a significant impact on our breast health via proper food choices and lifestyle adjustments. Making informed dietary choices includes food that is cancer-preventative in nature and some that can even help to destroy pre-cancerous cells.

“Choose color” needs to be a rule of thumb when browsing through the fruit and vegetable isle at your local grocery store. Foods that are naturally colourful and bright such as peppers, berries, oranges, red grapes, and cherries have higher amounts of a chemical called antioxidant that helps our body neutralize molecules known as free radicals. Although naturally occurring, free radicals are dangerous because they have the potential to harm our DNA causing lasting cellular changes that can lead to breast cancer. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the neutralizing effect of antioxidants can help prevent the genetic changes that lead to cancer. Although colourful fruit and vegetables are not the only source for antioxidants, it is a good place to begin. But remember; wash all fruit and vegetables to remove pesticides before consumption as they are a major negative factor in breast health. (Watch for “Pesticides and Their Effect on Breast Health”)

A daily helping of flax seeds and cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussels sprouts) helps balance estrogen levels, decreasing the risk for breast cancer by preventing excess estrogen from being reabsorbed into the body through the digestive tract. (High levels of estrogen are thought to be a leading cause of breast cancer.)

One last item that appeared consistently throughout my research was turmeric, noted for its antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory qualities and the ability to lower estrogen in post-menopausal women. Who knew!

The information I have provided here only touches the tip of the iceberg on the topic of food and breast health. There is endless research available that can provide us with the knowledge we require to make healthy food choices. But will we, as women, take the next step and put it into action? Get smart, and help others to get smart too! Pass the information on and keep learning. Remember, information is power, and it’s all up to you.

Being a curvy girl I always had such a hard time finding clothing that fit just right. Bras were a big frustration for me: always ugly and never comfortable. I never felt good about what I was wearing or myself. The moment I tried the first good fitting bra on literally changed my life. Now you can see my hourglass figure because the girls are where they should be. Clothes started fitting me better and I found my self-esteem. It seems funny to say but a good fitting bra changed my life. I went from a wall flower to an outgoing confident woman all because I now feel beautiful wearing beautiful garments.

What is your favorite part about being with The Girls?

Sharing that life changing moment with other women who have had the same frustration I did. Seeing the switch when they start seeing themselves differently and like what they see. I remember vividly the day a young client came in with her head down and shoulders drooped. But when she left she was twirling in her prom dress with her face beaming! That is why I do this.

Tell us about yourself (kids, hobbies, activities…what do you do outside of the store?)

I’m a traveler, a poet, and recent exercise addict. I love to try and experience new things. I’m addicted to coffee (black). And I’m close to my family.

What is your secret skill or superhero power?

Powerful Internal Voice: I can convince myself of anything.

What advice or tip can you give other women?

As Will Smith says, nurture the fire within you and never apologize for who you were born to be. And nothing is like owning a matching bra and panty set. Giggle.

Healthy Breasts for a Healthy Lifestyle: Wireless

What do contacts, high heels, and an underwire bra have in common? At the end of the day you need to give your body a rest from each of these items. For most of us, it takes little convincing to kick off our high heels, but if you are like me, the contacts and the underwire bra usually come off when it’s time to slip into my PJs.

It is recommended that an underwire bra be worn no more than 12 hours a day, allowing for freedom of movement and removal of toxins from the lymphatic system. Subtle bouncing of the breasts when we move, walk, exercise, etc., is vital to keep the lymph system functioning as it should. It gently massages and stimulates the lymph glands to move harmful toxins out.

Why are you with The Girls?

I knew I was wearing the wrong size bra. But it was the best I could get around here and yet I still fell out, pillowed over, tugged on the back and fidgeted constantly. When you are a full cup like I am you already have enough attention drawn to you, having all these bad fit problems didn’t help any. When Tammy told me it didn’t have to be that way, that there are bras out there for real women I got so excited I said “take me there”. I’ve always been big on equality and fairness and the fact that we had to travel for 6hrs for a basic necessity like a bra just wasn’t fair. And so the wheels started turning. I believe every women should have access to a proper fit, comfort and if she wants it, beautiful undergarments. The Girls Bra Shop is the realization of that belief.

What is your favorite part about being with The Girls?

There is an amazing feeling of gratitude from the clients when they have that “ah” moment. The camaraderie amongst all women when they enter our doors is fun and exciting. Although we may start out as strangers, we end as friends.

Tell us about yourself (kids, hobbies, activities…what do you do outside of the store?)

I have a fantastic family and support system. Although small we are strong together. I often refer to them as my G’s. Big G (aka Grant) is my hubbie of 20 yrs and lil’g (aka Georgia) is our wonderful 11yr old daughter. I have become addicted to running (even though I used to think runners were crazy). I am a doll artisan, a writer and I love to cook, I don’t have a green thumb – the only plant to really survive is the artificial fichus in my living room. I would love to volunteer more but for now I will stick with being the pianist and vocals in the worship band at my church, and volunteering with the Fundy Fencing Club. I try to sneak away to the lake whenever I can, where I can kayak, swim, get lost in a good read or sit with friends around the bonfire.

What is your secret skill or superhero power?

I have the memory of an elephant. While some may argue it is mostly trivia stored in my memory bank some of it is very useful.

What advice or tip can you give other women?
Remember that just because something is “in fashion” doesn’t mean you should wear it. Work with your assets rather than trying to look like the model in a magazine. Even she doesn’t look like that in real life.

Why are you with The Girls? From the moment I put my first bra on, nothing seemed to work. I was falling out of the top AND the bottom. My body was always unproportional - small waist, big chest - so none of my clothes ever fit properly. About 12 years ago, I had a reduction and went right back to wearing the same size I had always worn (nuts, I know, lol), but even though I still spent all day tugging the back down, the front seemed better. After having children, I underwent yet another change in shape....ugh, lol. When I started working at The Girls, I immediately realized that I was wearing a band 6" too big for me and needed a letter I didn't even know existed. Everything changed. My clothes fit, my shape was more defined, my confidence came out of hiding. I am now a self-proclaimed bra addict and am so much more comfortable in my own skin. Everyday now, when I look in the mirror, I embrace the curves I used to want to hide :)

What is your favorite part about being with The Girls? Giving women a new attitude toward themselves. I feel so much pride and excitement when I see a woman's self confidence change in a mere half hour fitting.

Tell us about yourself (kids, hobbies, activities…what do you do outside of the store?) I am a self-described nerd - strange and quirky are my favourite characteristics in myself and others. I am the mother of 2 amazing little people who always keep me on my toes. When I am alone, I love to paint. It's the most freeing way to express any one of the million thoughts I have dancing in my head at any given time, lol! I am a sugar junkie and have never met a food I didn't like :) I'm learning to try new things and am extremely stubborn. I live to surround myself with my amazing people and my absolute favourite thing to do is laugh.

What is your secret skill or superhero power? To find humour in strange and sometimes inappropriate places (I get it from my Dad, lol)

What advice or tip can you give other women? You are who you are. You were given the body, mind and soul you were meant to have. How Long Should My Bra Last?

Lately, I have been asked a lot “How long should my bra last?”. Unfortunately bras do not come with a lifetime warranty but, with a little care you can extend the life of your delicate undergarments. With so many women asking this question I thought I would do a little investigating and find the answer. We tell clients that with proper wear and care you can get a year out of a bra. You can imagine my surprise when I found most blogs, bra companies, and retailers claim that a good bra will last 3 to 6 months! Truthfully, with proper care, mine have lasted just over a year.

There are a few things you can do to help lengthen the life of your bra. When you come in for a fitting at The Girls Bra Shop Inc.™ our fit mistresses take the time to go through all of this but sometimes we need a refresher.

Never wear the same bra 2 days in a row. A bra is made of thousands elastine fibres. By wearing the same bra every day, it would break down the elasticity quicker, shortening the life of the bra. By giving it a day off you allow the bra to restore its shape and maintain the support required.
Build a bra wardrobe. In order to rotate your bras, you are going to need to build a bra wardrobe. While some women have a slight addiction to lingerie, others are more pragmatic about their bra wardrobe, but there are some essential bras every woman should consider adding to her collection, everyday bras, wireless, sport, to name a few. I will admit I have a few favourites in my collection so to make sure I don’t wear them out too fast I’ve invested in that style by getting one in each colour. Hand Wash Your Bras. We all know to wash our bras by hand in a gentle detergent but I bet there are many of you out there that still sneak them into the washer and dryer. Here’s what happens when you go against this important rule. Even using a lingerie bag, a bra’s underwire could potentially get entwined in other garments and ruin the composition of the wire. The dryer’s heat can be damaging to the delicate elastine fibres causing them to break down much quicker than a handwashing.
Use a gentle detergent. Let’s not forget the detergents used in washing machines are too harsh. Products like Forever New™ are formulated specially to preserve the elasticity of micro fibre and Lycra™ fabrics while gentle enough for delicate fabrics, promoting a long life to your undergarments.

Wash your bra after every 3 to 4 wears. This is a general rule of thumb. Obviously an exception to this would be your sports bras after your zumba class or run. If you are an avid runner like me, you may want to get a couple so you get them washed and dried for your next run day.
Hand washing is so very easy. Fill a sink with water and a gentle detergent like Forever New. Soak your bras. Rinse them. Pat them with a towel and then hang them to dry. No rubbing and scrubbing, this can break down the fibre as well. And unless you are a mechanic and spilling oil on your bra, it's unnecessary.

Take extra care of your T-Shirt bras. If there is a bra that you certainly MUST follow these rules with it's the foam lined, or padded, T-Shirt bras. Not only do you have the elasticity of micro fibre and the Lycra to worry about but you want to take care of that foam lining that gives you the smooth invisible look you love so much. Machines can cause the foam to break down creating wrinkles that will be visible under your clothing. We also recommend storing your T-Shirt bras in their natural shape, do not crush or fold them, as this too will damage the foam lining and create wrinkles and less support.

When is it time to replace it?

A few years ago I was traveling in the Asia Pacific and stumbled upon decorative bra straps while visiting a Mega Mall. I was entranced by all of the fun patterns and glamourous details. I recently read a post on a blog I enjoy about this customer's recent experience at a lingerie boutique she visited. Without going into detail, she did not enjoy it. Her review was such an eye opener to the poor service that is out there. You can read her post here.

It got me to thinking about the vision we had and still have for The Girls. Not only do we want women to find the right fitting bra for their shape and lifestyle, and not only do we want every woman do be able to own beautiful bras, but we want to provide it in an environment that makes every client feel good about themselves and their experience.

Exercise Your Right To Better Breast Health

This week I was astonished to learn that a healthy lifestyle involving proper eating habits and a weekly exercise program can affect your breast health. If you’re having trouble getting motivated, read on.

Four hours of exercise per week can result in a 37% reduction in the risk of breast cancer. Doing regular exercise will cut down your risk of developing the disease, as well as preventing its return in a breast cancer survivor. What’s troubling about this fact is that the later group knows this information already because they’ve been in a fight for their lives. They’ve been educated in the school of hard knocks. It’s time ladies that we turn the tables and educate ourselves before we too are faced with this life changing diagnosis.

Here’s how it works. Regular exercise lowers your levels of estrogen. Although women need estrogen to mature and to create strong bones, overexposure can lead to breast cancer. Eighty percent of all breast cancers are fueled by estrogen. Exercise is a natural way to reduce your estrogen levels, as well as reducing other hormones and growth factors that can cause breast cells to turn into cancer. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology reported that exercise reduced mortality from all causes in breast cancer survivors by 50%, when combined with a healthy diet. As women, young and old, we have a choice. Let’s become educated now on preventative measures to avoid relying on doctor intervention in the future to save our lives or limit the effects of an unhealthy life style.

A friend of my mom once said in jest, “If I knew I was going to live this long I would have taken better care of myself”. That sentiment stuck with us and luckily mom and I made the choice of a healthier lifestyle. In hindsight, mom wishes she had done it years sooner.

My make up on, bejeweled and with the clothes fitting so well, I sure was feeling swell.

A neat experience, a great charitable cause - wow, confidence abound!

Aware my body is not an air brushed model but a great reality,

I wanted to show the ladies of the audience no matter the age or size - all that they can be!

How do I describe what has been called the Fashion Event of the season? ... With awe and wonder.

On March 23rd of this year, over 90 women and eight businesses joined us in celebrating being real women and raising funds for a much needed organization, KV Outreach. Believing every woman is uniquely beautiful and should have the support system behind them (excuse the pun), Ann and I believe strongly in the free and confidential service KV Outreach provides to those in unhealthy relationships.

Months before the event, we put a call out to our clients for models. Eight beautiful, exciting, and local women answered the call and walked the cat walk wearing the latest fashions in bra sets, loungewear and swimwear made by the bra companies we love and sold at our online store. These women came from a variety of professions and lifestyles from university students to IT professionals.

We spent weeks of giggles with these women doing fittings getting ready for the evening. It really was a pleasure to learn more about them and to see their passion for encouraging self esteem in their peers. Ann and Tammy with Pam from Toose's had so much fun deciding what outfits and jewelry they should show off for us. It was wild, all shapes and sizes and they made everything look good.

Finally the sold out event was here and I can't tell you what a remarkable night it was. Women who were only strangers weeks before were lifting and supporting each other as women only know how. We were all so excited to be a part of this fabulous evening. Their make up was generously donated by the team at Yves Rocher accentuating each model's natural beauty.

There was so much energy as our guests enjoyed the decadent treats made for them by the talented team at the Bourbon Quarter and samples of wine carefully chosen and poured by the Valley Wine Cellar. The room was made ambient by the lovely bouquets by Sandra Miller Floral designs and sound and lighting generously donated by band Southern Comfort. Our own girls, at The Girls, made the event run without a hitch, doing as they only know how and putting their all into it.

As the fashion show began Ann and I were moved by the room full of women who applauded each model as she took her place on the runway. Women who are our friends, customers, and the neighbor in the grocery line behind you.

All in all it was a glamourous evening abundant with women encouraging and supporting women. Lisa from Playful Moments photography captured it all wonderfully.

In the end the event raised $1,600 from ticket proceeds. Ann and I were so encouraged by the response that we matched it and ended up presenting KV Outreach an amount of $3200.

New (To Us) Breast Screening Method, Digital Infrared Imaging

A friend recently introduced Ann and I to a new, non invasive method of breast screening called Digital Infrared Imaging (DII). Using a digital infrared camera and a high speed computer, the metabolic activity in the breast cells are measured, identifying potential problem areas 5 - 8 years before a mass is large enough to be seen with mammography. Since approximately 26 percent of all cancers in women occur in the breast, we felt it was our responsibility to learn more about the process so we could pass the information on to other women. Information is power, and the more we understand about our breast health the better armed we are against breast cancer. In November the date for our DII appointment was set, and last week we travelled to Moncton for the procedure.

Upon arrival, we were asked to fill out a questionnaire regarding our breast history. Moving to a private room, we undressed to the waist and for ten minutes let our breast adjust to the cool room temperature. Cooled down and ready to move on, we posed with our hands on our head while three pictures of our whole chest, breasts, and armpit area were taken, each from a different angle. Our hands were then placed in a 10 °C water bath for 1 minute. With the “cold challenge” complete, another batch of pictures was taken and, voila, it was over. Quick, simple, non-invasive, painless, respectful and professional! It was as easy as having a fitting by the girls at The Girls Bra Shop.

A certified thermologist will now analyze the images, and within six weeks, barring a postal strike, we will each receive a report outlining our current breast health as seen through the eye of a digital infrared camera. The same report will also be forwarded to two practitioners of our choice. With 88% accuracy, changes in our breast tissue function will be identified giving us a heads up of potential problem areas. In many cases, with early detection, health professionals can work to eradicate problems before they become a mass of cancer cells.

Digital Infrared Imaging is not meant to replace other screening methods such as mammography, but is a valuable first step assessment that can be done by any one at any time after puberty, regardless of your breast type (dense, pregnant, breastfeeding, fibrocystic, etc.) DII is just another tool enabling health management through practical and proactive knowledge. Embrace Your Shape Series. Part 1

There is a misconception that full bust means full figure. They are actually two different body shapes. Over the next few blog entries we are going to focus on different body shapes and what works best for each them. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule (I know, I am one of them), not all the advice will apply to your unique shape. As you read on you may say to yourself “that’s my shape”. Great, keep that suggestion and get it working for you, if it doesn’t apply to your shape than discard it and move on. You may even find you are a combo of two different shapes. You are not alone. We are all so unique that you can’t completely box us into just one category.

So what is the best shape to be? Simple. There is no best shape. You are distinct and one of a kind. Despite what the fashion magazines tell us, it isn’t a popularity contest. We are never going to look like the models in those magazines. Heck, the models don’t even look like that in real life. The goal is to work with what you’ve got. We all want what we don’t have- I want long lean legs but it is never going to happen so instead of trying to figure out how to stretch the bones in my legs, ouch! I am going to focus on my assets. And that’s what we want you to do.
Your body shape has very little to do with what the scales say or what size clothing you wear but rather it is determined by your measurements, a proportional description of your figure. A woman of any shape can be of any size and any size range: petite, average or tall. You may have heard of our body shapes labelled as fruit: The Apple, The Pear and the Hourglass. The Hourglass? That is not a fruit. Who came up with these categories ?

No matter your shape or size, the first step is building on a good foundation. Ah. Good old foundational garments are not what they used to be. And thank God for that! When is the last time you had a bra fitting? A year, two or maybe never. We can’t emphasize enough how much of a difference it makes in how your clothes will fit and how you will carry yourself by wearing a proper fitting bra. You and those around you will see a new found confidence and may even ask “have you lost weight?” just from putting on a supportive bra that lifts the girls up, and puts them where they should be. If you have ever complained about the back riding up, your cup runneth over, or the straps keep falling then you need to see a professional fit mistress.

When is the last time you cleaned out your panty drawer? It’s time to sort through the good, the bad and the ugly and ask yourself a few questions: “Would I be horrified to let the ER team see me in this?”, “Is it stretched out and thread bare?”, “Are the leg bands digging into your thighs?”, “Is the seat saggy?”. Out of the Box

Richard Chamberlain and Billie Holiday had it right: "No two people are alike". They were talking about taste but it holds true physically as well.

Notice the difference?

No two women have the same body shape, shoe size, arm length, and yes breast shape. Some breasts are large, some are small, some are denser than others, some are perkier, some are high and rounded, some start low but still rounded, some are flat at the end near the nipple, some are closer together than others, some have one significant larger than the other....and so on. Our breasts are unique to us.

Because of how unique each woman's breasts are it's hard to find a bra that works for you. That's why getting a fitting and knowing what works on you is so important. The style that your BFF likes may not be what works for you, even if you are the same size. What might give her good cleavage could be cutting off your air supply.

Every woman is different

Go to a bra boutique and get a professional fitting. I'm not talking about your local department store. I'm talking about a place that has a collection of bras from designers and manufacturers who spend their time and money researching the construction of the breast and how best to support the varying shapes and sizes out there. Any fit mistress in these boutiques will be able to help you narrow down what bras are going to best flatter and support you.

You don't live in a box and neither should your breasts.

That's what we say and it is what we believe too. The Girls spent the evening training with the Amoena rep on how to do fittings with mastectomy bras and breast forms. One of the comments the rep said as she was leaving was "how nice that these women can now have a place to shop, to be able to walk into a luxurious boutique like any other women, get fitted and find beautiful bras just for her." Reality is that most women in need of post breast surgery products have to go to some cold and sterile office to be fitted. Not the kind of environment a women wants to be in to shop for intimate apparel.

When we first opened the shop we wanted to make sure that our fittings for everyday bras were good before we got into mastectomy products. We have been open a year and a half now and the demand is growing. Women come into our shop and say how beautiful, the store, the product. They leave feeling beautiful. We want all women to have this experience. A few of my friends who have had either, lumpectomies or mastectomies have said to me "it would be so nice to walk into a lingerie store and be able to buy something pretty, off the rack." Well, now they can.

The Girls are adding mastectomy bras, swimsuits and breast forms to their collection. We carry products by Anita and Amoena. We have 3 staff who are trained by the Amoena rep and soon all staff will have the training required. It takes about an hour to do a fitting, so allow enough time, and once you have been fitted you can also shop via our online shop.

Back To School Special

It's that time of year again. The air is crisp. The leaves are starting to turn and fall colours fill the clothing stores. Being a country girl, it was a big deal going Back To School shopping. Mom would pile us in the car and we would head to the city. I would have all my money saved from my summer jobs, a list of school supplies, and a copy of Seventeen magazine with all the cool styles and trends circled.

This was always a big day for me. As we headed into Kmart, my eyes would pop out of my head at all the new things just waiting for me. But there was always one thing I just had to have to start the new school year with and that was the Back To School Kit. A big display in the center aisle, towering high with the FOR HIM kits and the FOR HER kits. There would be body lotion, soap, toothpaste, deodorant, razor, shaving cream, lip balm and gum. All for $3-$4. I always thought these were a great idea. From school to university I made sure to pick up one of these kits.

Well, Tammy and I thought what a great idea for the store too. Our Girls Rawk

This weekend “The Rack n’ Rollers”, which consisted of staff, customers, and friends of The Girls ran in a relay to support the Portage Atlantic "Recovery Trail" Project. Portage is a Youth Addiction Centre in New Brunswick. It's an amazing facility which has made an incredible difference in the lives of youth from the Kennebecasis Valley.

The fundraising of this remarkable team included a clothing swap attended by over 30 women, raffle ticket sales on two bras from the store, cash donations, company donations, and they sold water, gatorade and fresh fruit the day of the event.
In total the Rack n’ Rollers raised over $1500.00 and came in 2nd place!!

From the clothes that remained following the clothing swap, over 20 bags were donated to two different organizations: Saint John Clothing Bank and Canadian Diabetes Association.

Rainy Day Bra

When it’s raining and chilly out all I want to do is snuggle up in a fuzzy blanket and read a good book in front of the fire. I end the day with a hot choco and comfies. I push my toes into fuzzy warm slippers. Yoga pants and a sweat shirt are a must.

So is my rainy day bra: Twin Soft Cup. A wireless bra that is so soft to the touch some call it second skin. Made from microfiber; a dense, closely-woven yarn/fabric which is very light, smooth, soft, hard wearing and breathable; it’s no wonder this bra is my favorite for lounging around in.

It doesn’t give the same lift that a bra with wires does but that’s just fine. On a rainy day like today I’m looking for soft and cozy while still looking good and lifted.

Hmmm...I think my sofa and slippers are calling me.

Let's Rack and Roll

We have been tracking our running progress and testing our product over the past few months. And now is the time to put it to the test. On July 11th, the Girls Bra Shop is entering a team in the Run through History – Celebration of Green Space. We have all been training and preparing for the event. I doubt we are going to set any records but we will have fun supporting (giggle, I said support) a great cause. With the help of Freya and Shock Absorber we are raising funds to donate to the Portage Atlantic’s Recovery Trail. Portage Atlantic Recovery is the recipient of this year’s relay fundraising. We are raffling off a sports bra from both Freya and Shock Absorber. Freya’s generosity doesn’t stop there. They are also going to outfit our entire team with Freya Active or Elomi Energise sports bra. The Girls are excited about the support we have already gained from these two great companies. We may not finish first but we sure will look good.

Did I mention the team’s name? The Rack and Rollers. As you can see, they are already setting the stage to make this a fun event.

Do your ears hang low...

As we were discussing this blog entry and what we wanted to write, this song kept coming to mind and hummed by either one of us spontaneously. It’s been awhile since we have addressed the issues and complaints of a poor fitting bra and now that the winter jackets are back in the closet we see it is time to draw attention to these grievances again.

We so often hear clients tell us that the back is riding up, the straps keep falling down, their cup runneth over. So what do you do? Well, you should head to the Girls Bra Shop for a fitting, where the Girls will take time to not only measure but find the right bra that will give you the support and comfort you are looking for. The following are some of the more common complaints:

“My underwire digs in and hurts” Many women visit us saying this and are convinced that they never want to wear an underwire again. In most cases they are wearing the wrong cup size. If the cup is too small naturally it will dig and cause chafing and irritation. By getting a proper fitting and increasing the cup size you allow the wire to surround the breast and lay flat against your side without poking or digging in.

“My straps keep falling” Now some woman may need more of a racerback style or straps that come in closer because they may have narrow shoulders but most often the reason the straps are falling is because they need to adjusted. Much like if your belt is on too loose a notch, your pants will come down so are the straps of your bra. If they are too loose, they will slide off your shoulders. Keep in mind that most women have one breast larger than the other; therefore your straps may need to be adjusted differently to ensure the straps fit comfortably.

“I’m bulging over the top” We call this pillowing, it sounds so much nicer than bulging. This can ruin the look of your favourite Tshirt or sweater. Your breasts should fill the cup of the bra but not overflow. If you are coming out of the top of your bra, the cup is too small. If you are limiting yourself to shopping only at department stores than you may not have many options to fix this problem. At The Girls we carry bras up to a K cup. Having the right cup size will eliminate the pillowing as well as slim your look down.

“I am always pulling my band down. I can’t keep it from riding up.” We have all fallen victim to this one at one time or another. If the band is riding up it must be too loose. Whether the bra is worn out and stretched or you bought it too big to begin with, the solution is simple. Make the band tighter. You need to have the band snug in order for it to stay in place. I can hear some of you saying “I don’t like the back fat” I realize this is a concern however a bigger concern should be that your breast are being properly supported. Another reason your band may be riding up in the back could be that the straps are too tight. Loosen up a bit. Women mistakenly tighten the straps to give them the lift and support. Your support should be coming from the band not the straps.

Cool Runnings

After a 2 week break from running and getting over a mild flu,I finally got back on the treadmill. I knew it was not going to be my best run but I was determined to get back at it none the less. While Tammy has been doing more of an endurance run, I prefer doing intervals. I started off with a 1/2 mile walk to warm up. I wanted to get a good warm up so I ramped up the incline to 6.5 and walked at a 3.5 mph. I usually run a 1/4 mile lap at 5 or 5.2 mph (running magazines would call that a light jog) but today I felt strong and wanted to push myself a little further so I pushed the buttons and ran at 6mph. It felt good but I was ready for a walk when I finished that 1/4 mile. I walked for 2 mins and pushed myself again and continued this interval training for the rest of my run. 28 min. later I finished my 2 miles. Not my best time but that didn’t matter. What mattered is that I pushed myself and did it.

Note to self: running gear is not as gimmicky as I once thought. Grabbing the first pair of track pants I saw I got dressed for my run. Cotton is not the best for running. Moisture wicking breathability is essential if you are planning on breaking a sweat. Half way through my run I was reminded of this. The cotton pants felt like 20 lb weights on my legs while my upper half was cool and comfortable. Thanks to my Freya Active sports bra.

I love this bra. It provides the lift and support my GG’s need without compression. The inner sling extends to the shoulder strap to enhance and reduce “bounce” when I run. The Cool Max Fabric does exactly what it claims to do, pull the moisture away. Cool Max Fabric dries five times faster than cotton. I have this bra in nude and red but I have to say I am partial to the red. Maybe it is because it could pass as a running top and I don’t really need another shirt over it or maybe because I love that a full bust girl like me can get something besides nude, even for when I am running.

This is one of the tenets behind The Girls. Much of what we do is based on this; from our professional fittings and beautiful product selection to supporting Coverdale Center for women. This tenet thrives deep in the hearts of Ann and I, The Girls.

As I was writing a blog for Mother’s Day I realized that for me, this principle came from my mother. Through every step in my life she has encouraged me. She is my best advocate and believes strongly in what I can do. But it wasn’t mom as my cheerleader that gave me this principle. Rather it’s how she models it in her own life.

My mother is the youngest person I know. She is exuberant, joyful, and an adventurer. She retired at the early age of 47, became a painter, and has written her first novel. All because she believes she can! It’s not an arrogance thing, she believes in her potential and has enough self-esteem and confidence to know she’ll do well; success or fail.

I’m so thankful that I learned this from her. I’m a successful career woman, co-own a fun and demanding business with Ann, journal an online travelogue, am penning my own novel and poetry, create my own art work, trying my hand at making my own clothing, and have become a runner...all because I believe I can.

Ann and I are similar that way. She is a doll maker, co-owns two demanding businesses, sketches, writes, and runs...all because she believes she can.

For Ann, I believe the principle comes from being a mother and wanting to pass this down to her beautiful daughter. There is so much potential in her young hands and imagine how much more she can accomplish, if she believes she can!

Running...without bounce

It’s been 4 weeks since we announced that we were taking up running. It’s been 4 weeks of infrequent runs. If only there were more hours in the day.

With the nicer weather appearing I’m motivated to get off of my treadmill and get outside for a run. I’m not there yet, I want to be more comfortable and confident first. So time to get serious.

I am proud to report that I am now able to run for 20 minutes, booking ending with a 5 minute walk to warm up and cool down. I’m averaging 1.8 miles in 30 minutes. My goal is 2 miles.

This all started as a way to test our sports bras. As you can imagine, bounce control is important as a 36F. Today I ran with Shock Absorber’s level 4 sports bra. A company that stands behind their product they have a 28 day trial run: “Your money back if breast bounce is not significantly reduced.” And let me tell you, I’m in love with this bra!

Not only is it high functioning but it is also attractive and comfortable.

The Girls Have Taken Up Running

We are getting some great sports bras in and what better way to learn about them but to test them ourselves. The Girls have taken up running.

Follow our progress as we train...well we're not sure for what yet.

As with everything we each approach things differently. Ann is doing Interval Training (running/walking) while Tammy is about the endurance (running for the full 30 minutes). Follow us as we challenge ourselves to improve our times and distance. Each week we will give you an update on how we and our favorite sports bras are doing.

Ann - 2.5 miles in 34:30 minutes
Tammy - 1.8 miles in 30:03 minutes

Recently, in a large city in France , a poster featuring a young, thin and tan woman appeared in the window of a
gym. It said, "This Summer, do you want to be a Mermaid or a Whale?"

A middle-aged woman, whose physical characteristics did not match those of the woman on the
poster, responded publicly to the question posed by the gym.

To Whom It May Concern,
Whales are always surrounded by friends (dolphins, sea lions, curious humans.) They have an active sex life, get pregnant and have adorable baby whales. They have a wonderful time with dolphins stuffing themselves with shrimp.
They play and swim in the seas, seeing wonderful places like Patagonia, the Bering Sea and the coral reefs of Polynesia.
Whales are wonderful singers and have even recorded CDs. They are incredible creatures and virtually have no predators other than humans.They are loved, protected and admired by almost everyone in the world.

Mermaids don't exist. If they did exist, they would be lining up outside the offices of Argentinean psychoanalysts due to identity crisis. Fish or human? They don't have a sex life because they kill men who get close to them, not to mention how could they have sex? Just look at them ... where is IT? Therefore, they don't have kids either.
Not to mention, who wants to get close to a girl who smells like a fish store?

The choice is perfectly clear to me: I want to be a whale.

P.S. We are in an age when media puts into our heads the idea that only skinny people are beautiful, but I prefer to enjoy an ice cream with my kids, a good dinner with a man who makes me shiver, and a piece of chocolate with my friends.
With time, we gain weight because we accumulate so much information and wisdom in our heads that when there is no more room, it distributes out to the rest of our bodies.. So we aren't heavy, we are enormously cultured, educated and happy.

Beginning today, when I look at my butt in the mirror I will think: "Good grief, look how smart I am!"

Well the decorations are put away for another year and it is time to think about the new. The start of a new year always brings ideas of hope and change, whether it is personal change, community or even global. But the idea of change is what fuels us all on in the dull winter months. Here at the Girls we have always been passionate about self improvement and the overall betterment of women everywhere. We are a small company, not looking to change the world but if we can help just one person today than it has been a good day.
Starting January 2010, The Girls will be rolling out a new program... The Coverdale Centre is a drop-in center where women can find support, referrals to community services, general counselling, addiction counselling, positive recreation, and self-improvement courses. It has been an interesting road we have traveled in the first 8 months of business. While we opened the shop mainly out of selfish desire to have beautiful bras that fit, we also wanted other women to have the same and to feel as beautiful and as confident as we do when wearing them. Self image has always been something each of has battled with, I never really grasped how many women join us. Tall, short, thin, full, mature and young we have cringed at that girl staring back at us. And no matter the size, everyone has whispered the mantra “I am in the process of losing weight”. I often ask myself “do they see what I see?” Radiant Smiles, sparkling eyes shining, no one pays any mind to the imperfections or blemishes. But no, they don’t see what I see.

When we opened the store we didn’t want posters from the companies plastered all over the store; posters of models with airbrushed thighs and crimson cheeks like a Botticelli. We wanted real woman framed on the walls of the shop. We started thinking it should be us, the Girls, in the photos, modeling the bras. Not because we believed we were models but because we are real women. Six staff, six body shapes and sizes..but Real Women. Exposing our most vulnerable and fragile sides. Allowing the photographer to see us in very little, was also allowing her to see our inner selves. How we saw ourselves. With a few glasses of wine and many laughs, and the occasional glimpse at the sample shots we dispelled all the horrible feelings and gave a free rein to the power and confidence that had been buried so deep. Therapeutic is not the right word, no, liberating and uplifting better describe the 7hr photo shoot.

For 3 weeks we waited in anticipation. All of us feeling beautiful, glamorous and wonderful, confidant, and empowered. And then we saw the proofs. Victoria West presented us with 51 proofs. Each of us took a little time to really absorb the magnitude of this project. While immediately drawn to the raw beauty of each of the other girls we individually honed in on this flaw and that imperfection of our own poses. Through many discussions and self evaluations I slowly discovered that I do not see what the others see. Hearing those conversations with the many women in the dressing rooms, crashing against my own self doubts, I started realizing, we are all the same and I need to heed a little of my own advice. I like what others see in me and I am going to start focusing on that and stop drawing attention to what they never noticed in the first place.

“For me it was empowering. Although I still saw my flaws, I saw what others saw. Saw that my flaws weren't the main focus, in fact, it solidified that most people don't even see them until I point them out. So I think I'll stop doing that. :)”

This has been the most rewarding and cathartic experience. One we are already planning on repeating next year. If you have such an opportunity, I say embrace it. You won’t regret it.

The next time you look at a picture of you or look in the mirror, I hope you see what I see.

Too often we are finding Brides and bridal parties leaving a very critical part of their attire to the last minute. Thousands of dollars and many hours are spent on the bride’s and bridesmaids’ gowns and yet the foundational garments that are meant to make the dresses look good become an afterthought. Not everyone remembers to pay enough attention to what goes on underneath. In reality you should be finding the proper bra, corset, shapewear needed to work with your dress before forking over the cash. The right undergarments can make or break your dress.
Remember, 50% of all women are larger than a D cup. Most strapless bras do not come in the larger cup sizes and while we do try to keep as many sizes in stock as possible sometimes they have to be ordered in. Special Ordering can take several weeks and should not be left to the last minute. In addition, many gowns are constructed in such a way that finding undergarments that fit and don't show above the dress is tricky at best.
Know your size – while the statistics say 80% of women are wearing the wrong size we are finding the percentage to be much higher. Knowing your size is an important factor in getting a beautiful fit on your wedding day. A poor fit shows through the dress, creating unsightly bulges. Take the time to be properly fit.
Finding the right, corset, bra, or other undergarments can be done right. Just don't assume that your usual ones will do the job, and start shopping early. What you wear under your dress can make a big difference in what it looks like on the outside, so getting it right is important if you want to look your best on your big day. Every outfit begins with a good foundation.

Caring for Your Bra

Your bra cares for you; you should care for your bra. Properly looking after your bra will prolong the life of the bra (adding up to 2 years of wear). We’ve laid out a few guidelines on washing, drying, storing, and even wearing your bra.

Washing Guidelines
We recommend that you always hand wash your bras after every 2-3 wears. Do not put your bra in your washing machine, no matter the style. Your bra is not made to withstand it. Putting your bra in a machine can:

twist the underwire of your bra causing them to come out
pull and stretch the bra back
crinkle the foam in T-Shirt bras causing it to lose its smoothing shape
void manufacturer guarantees as they test their bras for hand wash only

I can hear the groans of all of those busy women out there. No fear ladies, all that is required is simply soaking your bras for 10-15 minutes. That’s right, no scrubbing required or attention required.

Soak your bras in cold water. Use a sensitive soap that does not bleach or degrade lace and elastic. We use Forever New. Do not use standard laundry detergents; they are too harsh for the materials used in the manufacturing of your bra.

Drying Guidelines
Once you have hand washed your bras, be careful not to wring them out. Instead pat them dry with a towel and then hang them to drip dry. Your bra should dry overnight.

Never put your bra in the dryer. Even the cool setting on your dryer can ruin the elastic in your bra. It will also shrink the foam in your T-shirt bras and create wrinkles that will show under your clothing.

Storing Guidelines
T-Shirt bras need special attention. You should either hang your T-Shirt bra or lay it out, taking care not to dent the cup shape. Do not fold one cup into another.

Wearing Guidelines

Your Bra Wardrobe

You wouldn’t wear the same shoes with every outfit. And you shouldn’t wear the same bra with everything either!

Your bra wardrobe should consist of a selection from each of the following three categories:

Everyday Bras
Special Occasion Bras
Sports Bras

Traditional thinking says that each woman should have a small collection of EVERYDAY BRAS in black, white, and nude. We don’t agree. Your EVERYDAY BRAS CAN BE FUN TOO! Choose colors based on what you wear. If you wear white, choose a nude bra so you don’t see the bra under the shirt. Do not wear a white bra under white. If you wear dark colors, you can choose a bra in black or in another fun color. I have a fabulous blue and red bra that I wear under my black shirts. It makes me feel so pretty and doesn’t show through my shirt.

Rule of thumb is to have 5 to 7 EVERYDAY BRAS. We all do it, but you should not wear a bra for a few days in a row. Instead alternate your bras throughout the week, giving the bra a break. The reason for this is that body heat tends to relax the fabric. Giving your bra a break will maintain the original shape and extend the life of the bra.

You should also vary the style of your EVERYDAY BRAS depending on what you wear. A T-Shirt bra will give you smooth lines under figure hugging clothing while a lace bra will shape you beautifully under a knit sweater.

So enough about everyday, what about SPECIAL OCCASIONS? What is your special occasion? Are you going to the masquerade ball? A strapless bra may work perfectly with that dress. Maybe you are going out for an evening of dinner and dancing? Or maybe you just want to treat yourself to a lacey set for when you want to feel your best? Whatever the outfit or occasion, there is a bra designed for it. Sometimes I wear an indulgent lacey set under my everyday clothes….just because.

If you lead an active lifestyle, you should also invest in SPORTS BRAS with good bounce control. This will not only keep the girls comfortable while you are working out or competing on the field, it will keep your breasts healthier and perkier longer. With age the connective tissues that hold your breast up slacken and cause sagging. This is accelerated with the bouncing from physical activity. If you exercise everyday, you should have more than one SPORTS BRA to alternate throughout the week. Again, this extends the life of the bra and eliminates the icky factor of re-wearing a sweaty bra.

With today’s designs you have so many options open to you in style and color. Build a bra wardrobe that not only suits your lifestyle and personality, but that you love.

Women still need bra-fitters, but they are a dying breed. We're expected to go to department stores and try bras on ourselves. I wore the same size bra through my 20’s and 30’s. I even wore the same brand and style. I would make my trek to the department store and try on countless styles and sizes and always leave with the same style and size that I started out with. Does this sound familiar? When I finally got fitted by a professional bra fitter, not only was I shocked by my new size but I felt so much better. Beside the back and neck pain disappearing, I lost inches from the new and improved lift.

Did you know that the average woman's breasts change size, shape and distribution at least six times during her life? That's why it’s so important to get a professional bra fitting and only wear bras that fit you properly! Ill-fitting bras can cause stress, back aches, headaches and other problems.
